More than a month before the opening of the new 2011 season at Australia, Gerhard Berger raises serious doubts about whether Mercedes may be a candidate for formula one World Championship.
Former Ferrari and McLaren driver points out that silver own car is already behind on the slopes in the winter test sessions and "there is no logical reason why need to update".
Norbert Haug has admitted that, if a race is held today, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg would not finish among the top ten.
But hopes are high for an important upgrade package comes ahead of the first race.
"I have my doubts," said Austrian Berger.
"I think Red Bull have the best car, see Ferrari and McLaren behind", he said, and added that Renault could be "surprised".
On Mercedes, Berger was concerned that Brackley team suffered in the recent redevelopment in the area of "Racing engineers", in addition to draw new technical boss Bob Bell in "the aerodynamics Department".
"So there is no logical reason why should be up-to-date with McLaren or Ferrari", said Berger, "to say nothing of Red Bull."
